Luis Mendo
Artist and author based in Japan. Luis studied graphic design in Spain and The Netherlands. After working as an editorial designer and creative director for 20 years in Amsterdam, Luis moved to Tokyo and changed his career to drawing. His illustrations can be found on books, websites, magazines, advertising and clothing worldwide.
His artworks have been shown in art galleries in Spain, France, Japan, South Korea and the USA.
Preferred subjects include sensory-driven stories, city/urban life, interiors, objects, animals and people in context. Also travel, narratives, feelings and human interactions. Luis's illustration signature is to make mundane things look special and make visible the invisible. He can't avoid impregnating positivism to everything he draws.
He was the Creative Director and co-founder of creative residency Almost Perfect together with his wife Yuka, from 2018 to 2025.
In 2024 Luis launched Mundo Mendo, a membership program where he shares art, stories and thoughts that subsequently and annually become printed books.
In a newsletter called The Illustrated, Luis shares and promotes his favorite illustration talent.

ルイス・メンド
日本を拠点に活動するアーティスト兼作家。スペインとオランダでグラフィックデザインを学び、アムステルダムで20年間、エディトリアルデザイナー兼クリエイティブディレクターとして活躍した後、東京に移住し、ドローイングに転向しました。彼のイラストレーションは、書籍、ウェブサイト、雑誌、広告に加え、世界中のアートギャラリーやアパレルにも掲載されています。
作品は、スペイン、フランス、日本、韓国、アメリカのギャラリーで展示されています。
好んで扱うテーマは、感覚に訴える物語、都市生活、インテリア、物、動物、人物などです。また、旅、物語、感情、人間関係などもテーマにしています。ルイスの特徴は、ありふれたものを特別なものに見せ、目に見えないものを可視化することです。彼が描くものすべてに、ポジティブな精神を注ぎ込むことを避けては通れません。
ルイスはアート作品の制作と並行して、2018年から2025年に閉鎖されるまで、妻の有加と共にクリエイティブ・レジデンス「Almost Perfect」のクリエイティブ・ディレクター兼共同設立者を務めました。
2024年には、ルイスがメンバー限定プログラム「Mundo Mendo」を立ち上げました。これは、彼がアート、ストーリー、そして思考を共有するもので、最終的には書籍シリーズとなる予定です。
2025年には、彼が愛するイラストレーションの才能を紹介するニュースレター「The Illustrated」を創刊しました。
